TeleAdapt Ltd part-time HR Consultant in this connectivity business, reporting to Group MD. Key recruitment and HR processes e.g. Global employee incentive plan, objective setting programme
Railtrack Plc, HR and Change Consultant to Railtrack Information Systems (RTIS), moving the business from program developers and support to an IS business consultancy, which agreed system specifications, managed the development and implementation via the big integrators such as Logica, Unisys etc. Headcount change planned from 600 to 135 core staff. Utilised a vision statement (RDCO – relationship, design, control and operate) to underpin new organisation design and people alignment. Improved labour quality by superior recruitment and selection techniques.
United Industries Plc, HR Consultant, managing post acquisition rationalisation of Channel Holdings plc, with focus on Basys technology Ltd, a 320 personnel business with £14M sales working on communication systems. Undertook a total revision of all terms and conditions of employment, which had been neglected for years and were not supporting the business goals, via Trade Unions (Amicus/AUEW/MSF and T&GWU) and designing and utilizing a ‘FreshStart’ programme. Undertook property valuation, amidst changing land values. Implemented an HR information system.
Black&Decker, HR Consultant, established a European Accounting Centre (Shared Service centre) in Cork to serve B&D European operations. Resourced and recruited multi lingual accountancy professionals across Europe. Managed European staff reductions in Spain, Portugal, France, Germany, Italy, etc. Undertook work on process mapping and training of new staff.



1996 - 1999 SIEBE COMPAIR Ltd

Group Human Resources Director
Project managed a major international change programme in CompAir, $525M sales, and 3700 employee group with 24 businesses. A review of the business Product/Market presence revealed major overlap and undesirable concentration. To expand the market presence the organisation had to change from being based on country based product companies to a regional sales organisation delivering brands. Manufacturing moved to be cost effective and undertaken in centres of excellence, via resizing, definition of new business processes, new organisation culture change and people alignment with revised workflow to establish a ‘Lean Enterprise’ using Kaizen and Six Sigma etc.

Delivery of the change programme became my responsibility and was complex, and timing of events and changes were managed to best effect using project management tools. It was tackled at two levels, top down and bottom up. A road show displayed the business vision to the management teams, and was delivered via an overlapping cascade to all employees. Simultaneously the large-scale programme of Kaizen events (140 events in 5 months) empowered employees to make efficiency changes and to own the new processes. Good processes, with supporting metrics, were then transmitted across the Group via a Best Practice vehicle, which included extensive use of ‘disciples’ (volunteers drawn from the Kaizen events and who, with support, led further Kaizen events to change and align processes such as order processing, engineering design standards, manufacturing process, etc.). M&A work with CompAir included research, HR due diligence and post acquisition integration in different business environments.

The work on aligning people with the new organisation was notable for its success, and performance management, talent audits and development centres were used.

1992 - 1996 LARJER LTD

Director managing TUPE and transition issues of a business contractorisation of government facilities. Transfer of staff under TUPE regulations from satellite receiving stations and bid management e.g. PHLS.

1987 - 1992 SIEMENS PLESSEY SYSTEMS

Personnel Director
£150M sales group of three companies on five sites employing 3200 people. In addition to the HR function, additional work included:
Project Management:
1) Building Siemens Ilford plant with project costing of £14.5M, brought in on time and below cost. Major redesign of workflow, moved the Ilford plant from line to cellular manufacture.
Building of a £6M Engineering block brought in on time and below cost.
2) Significant work on manpower planning using measured competences, and bid data to implement change of business enabling it to address different markets (air traffic management) and re size.
3) Major training & development initiative to re-skill the business to tackle new markets, (accredited training recognised internationally and won a £100K training initiative award)
4) Relocation of a 300-headcount site and the site sale.
5) General management of the Radio Development business

Early Career

1979 - 1987 GEC AVIONICS Personnel Manager
Major recruitment initiative, recruited 1600 professional engineers in 20 months
Identified and acquired a new site, transferred 200 engineers
