Programme Director, Mobile Internet – Nokia UK Ltd., Camberley, Surrey

Programme Director with full business responsibility for a critical and complex Mobile Internet project. This involved directing a number of programme teams including software development, requirements, architecture, infrastructure, testing, marketing, sales, technical support, third party integration, documentation and training across various Nokia sites in Europe. The annual budget was approximately €20M with a total programme team of approximately 120 people (programme managers, product managers, technical architects, development managers, web and application developers, technical writers and testers). I was also Group Manager for 80 R&D staff in the UK, with responsibility for recruitment, line management, finance, facilities, HR, lab management and IT support. Key achievements:

 Established multi-national programme team and defined programme strategy
 Met with key customers to align programme with client objectives
 Managed complete architecture redesign
 Managed delivery of several product iterations

October 1999 – April 2001

Head of Systems Integration, UK - Nokia UK Ltd., Camberley, Surrey

I was headhunted into Nokia as Head of Systems Integration for the UK, a start-up venture for Nokia. The UK headcount peaked at 120 people and the group delivered customisation, integration and development of mobile Internet solutions. Key achievements:

 Grew the UK headcount from 40 people to 120 people in the first year
 Established and managed four Practices; Project Management, Systems Engineering, Business Consulting and Infrastructure Support Services to provide resources for pre- and post-sales support, customisation, integration and development for multiple projects for Nokia worldwide
 Managed cost centre budgets for each Practice (c £10M)
 Managed service levels for IT support, Facilities and Human Resources

January 1997 - September 1999
Consulting Practices Director - CSC Computer Sciences Ltd.,
Farnborough, Hampshire

I was Director of three Consulting Practices: Systems Consulting, Electronic Commerce and Graduate Foundation. I had revenue responsibility for c£25M of consulting business in the UK with over 220 staff. Key achievements:

 Increased systems consulting revenues from £12M to £20M in one Financial Year - grew margins by 12% and exceeded overall billing target of 70% by 14% - the highest performing Consulting Practice in the UK.
 Grew systems consulting headcount from 100 to 160 staff in 15 months.
 Established an E-Commerce consulting Practice and education programme.
 Managed the recruitment of 50 graduates between July 1998 and July 1999
 Established and managed 10 best-practice competency projects.
 Managed the implementation of a UK Consulting Career Development Programme
 Established an extensive Graduate Development Programme
 Managed a central Resourcing and Recruitment Group
 Trained staff in Consulting Skills and Consultative Selling.

Programme Manager - CSC Computer Sciences Ltd., Farnborough, Hampshire

Programme Manager of a high-profile IT strategy/change programme (budget £3M) in the Aerospace sector, operating at Senior Board level. Key achievements:

 Operated at Board level, dealing with Finance Directors, co-ordinated the deliverables of the UK, US and France for a number of related Groups.
 Managed a BPR change programme to facilitate Workgroup computing (groupware, workflow, document management, image processing).
 Directed an Infrastructure refresh programme in the UK, US and France, including new PCs, networked printers and provision of a transatlantic WAN link to enable information sharing (e-mail and Intranet initially). Migration to a 32-bit architecture.
 Facilitated the revision of a complete suite of user training, including the establishment of a Learning Centre and individual IT development plans for all users.

Software Development Director - Wallingford Software Ltd., Oxfordshire
(Wallingford Software are a wholly-owned subsidiary of the HR Wallingford Group, an independent company specialising in consultancy and research in civil engineering hydraulics and the water environment. Wallingford Software is the leading supplier of hydraulic simulation software to the UK Water Industry.)

Key achievements:

 Managed all software development projects (NT client-server using OA and RDBMS) including requirements definition, software development and delivery.
 Consistently delivered all development projects to budget, quality and schedule, including the integration with third-party vendors and external applications.
 Initiated and spearheaded bespoke development projects for Water plc’s and consultancies; delivered to budget and schedule and to agreed quality and requirements. Overall I developed c£200K of incremental revenue.
 Devised and installed a new software development process that centred on rapid prototyping and close customer contact at the requirements stage and throughout all stages of development. Developed templates for Design Specifications, Functional Specifications and Test procedures and managed their completion in line with customer needs.

April 1995 - April 1996
Programme Manager - Wallingford Software Ltd., Oxfordshire

Programme Manager for various change initiatives:

 Overhauled the Customer Services Group, and measurably improved pre- and post- sales support, technical support and customer training.
 Grew the support revenues to c25% of the total income (c£500K per annum) and measurably improved the level of service by implementing improvement programmes based on customer feedback.
 Developed and implemented a more formal and structured training business.

April 1995 - December 1996
Programme Manager - Wallingford Software Ltd., Oxfordshire

Appointed by the Group main Board to additionally assume responsibility for IT services across the site. The IT function involved managing 60 networked workstations and c200 networked PCs driven from 3 SUN Sparc servers. Key achievements:

 Audited and then restructured the IT business, developed a 3-year IT strategic plan including a revised infrastructure and consistently managed the service to agreed levels and metrics, outsourcing where appropriate.

January 1993 - March 1994
Publications Consultant - CHAM Ltd., Wimbledon, Surrey

Provided publications consultancy to CHAM Ltd., a world leading software house specialising in Computational Fluid Dynamics. Key achievements:

 Managed the design of user interfaces, publications and training development.
 Led the change from traditional hard copy publications and classroom training to an integrated on-line information system with on-line tutorials, hyper-help and on-line context-sensitive help.

September 1992 - December 1993
Training Consultant - Jaguara Ltd., Havant, Hampshire

Provided training consultancy to Jaguara Ltd, a technical education and computer consultancy. Key achievements:

 Developed a full programme of European IT seminars in coordination with world experts and co-sponsoring companies and achieved c40% increase in revenues.

1990 - 1992 International Development Manager – Digital Equipment Co. Ltd., Reading, Berkshire

Reported to the worldwide International Systems Engineering Vice President. Senior management team responsibility with influence over 8,000 Digital Engineering staff and numerous customers porting to Digital platforms.

Directed a consultancy programme with Engineering design groups in the US and Japan to ensure software and publications were designed for ease of translation and use in markets and languages worldwide. Held functional responsibility for over 90 staff in Digital Europe, US, Japan and Asia.

Key achievements:

 Directed a change programme that generated c$5M in savings by defining and implementing an architecture for localised products (hard copy, help and training).
 Managed worldwide consultancy and training for over 1500 Digital and third-party software engineers and publications professionals.
 Undertook a detailed review with Digital Japan to define and agree several strategies to successfully achieve the delivery of Japanese products simultaneously with US and European products.

Reported to the International Engineering Development Manager. Promoted to the role of European Development Manager that entailed line management of two Groups each of 20 staff in the UK and France. Responsible for spearheading a consultancy and training service to ensure products were designed to meet international requirements.

Publications Manager with responsibility to build a new department and manage an annual budget of c£2.5M. Responsible for the design and delivery of all international hardware and software documentation.
