May 2000 – March 2001 Struan Resources Ltd - Consultant

Working for 10 months within Deutsche Bank London in various roles in the Equity Operations Group. Whilst also having hands on jobs during this period, another emphasis was on coaching younger staff and managers, and passing on to them the benefit of Michael’s vast experience.

1998 - March 2000 Nomura International plc.
Head of Debt and Fixed income settlements

Director responsible for all Debt, fixed income and derivative products. Managing a group of 5 departments and 50 staff covering; International and Domestic bond settlements, OTC and Exchange traded derivatives, Futures clearing and settlement, Foreign Exchange and Money Market settlements.

In December 1998 Nomura took the decision to outsource all of the back office and IT functions to its sister company Nomura International. Michael was appointed as Director of the Debt and Fixed income group and given specific responsibility to project manage the integration process. This was successfully completed within 3 months.

Major achievements:

Successfully project managed the outsourcing of Operations and IT functions to new company.
Re-engineered the Debt group reducing headcount by 20 per cent.
Reduced costs by £2 million on a projected budget of £7.5 million
Completed business and systems analysis for participation in the REPOCLEAR.
Completed operational functional requirements document for transactions emanating from electronic broking systems COREDEAL & BROKERNET.

1992 – 1998 Nomura Bank International plc.
Head of Operations, IT and Administration

Deputy General Manager reporting directly to the President of the bank. Responsible for over 60 staff providing operational support for the following products:

Derivatives, Swaps, Foreign Exchange and Money Markets, Commercial Lending, Trade Finance and Retail Banking. In addition directly managed the IT department covering all aspects of Network and systems support. Administrative duties included the development and maintenance of the Bank’s Business Recovery Plan. The ordering and purchasing of all office equipment and supplies. Maintenance of the banking and general insurance covers.

Major achievements:

Successfully managed the Bank’s Euro conversion project.
Developed and implemented the company’s Y2K compliance program.
Successfully reduced overheads and expenses year on year.
Created infrastructure to enable Nomura to create a Global Foreign Exchange department.
Standardised desktop application delivery on Windows NT and Microsoft Office.
Developed User acceptance test plans for the introduction the BANKWIDE general ledger system and NTDS a front/back office system supporting Foreign Exchange.
Set-up user help desk function.

1988 – 1992 Bank of New York
Head of Global Custody Operations

Following the merger of Irving Trust Company and Bank of New York Michael was appointed to Vice President in charge of the combined Global Custody operations. Responsible for 80 staff in City and West End locations. Managing assets in excess of £80 billion in over 30 international markets.

Major achievements:

Successfully managed the post merger integration, physical relocation and downsizing of the two bank’s combined securities operations.
Project managed the selection and implementation of the VISTA securities movement and control system.
Set-up Client liaison Group to improve customer relations and client reporting.
Significantly increased European and UK custody client base.

1986 – 1988 Irving Trust Company
Manager General Banking

Assistant Vice President responsible for 5 product groups and 45 staff covering:
Commercial Lending, Private Banking, Retail Banking, Trade Finance and Nostro and Securities reconciliations.

Major achievements:

Project managed the selection and implementation of a Portfolio Management system for private clients.
Automated the reconciliation process through the implementation of the CARS system.

1983 – 1988 Irving Trust Company
Manager Treasury Operations

Assistant Vice President responsible for the operational support for all Foreign Exchange and Money Market Operations. Comprised of two departments and 20 staff.

Major achievements:

Project managed the functional requirements, UAT and implementation of an in-house developed FX/MM trading and support system.
Successfully implemented the BART/TRAM confirmation matching systems.

1974 – 1983 Irving Trust Company
Manager Computer Operations

Having joined the company as a temporary telex operator was taken on permanently and promoted to supervisor in charge of the communications department. During this time the company undertook a major automation project and Michael was appointed as an Assistant Treasurer with responsibility for all computer and telecommunications within the Bank.

Major achievements:

Planned the construction and implementation of the banks first data centre.
Project managed the conversion of manual records to the Kapiti General Banking system.
Project managed the automation of funds transfer via the SWIFT system.
Appointed Chairman of the Kapiti user group.
Implemented distributed processing via desktop computers.
